Maui's coolest small town has a distinct international flair. This north shore town melds elements of its 100-plus year history as a booming sugar plantation camp with over 30 years of recognition as the "Windsurf Capital of the World." Paia’s thriving multi-ethnic culture began in the 1890s when laborers were imported to work in the Paia Sugar Mill or nearby cane fields. The townspeople were a mix of Chinese, Filipino, Japanese, Korean, Puerto Rican and Portuguese, who lived and worked together in harmony. A century later, the town continued to attract people from around the world once a group of young surfers discovered the perfect wind conditions at nearby Ho'okipa Beach and developed a new sport of surfing with a sail. The result is a picturesque beach town with brightly colored plantation-era wooden buildings. Inside the vibrant storefronts you’ll find at least 40 boutiques, offering a wide selection of men’s, women’s and children’s apparel, designer swimwear, surfing, windsurfing and beach gear, jewelry and art studios along with home furnishings. Restaurants and eateries are in no short supply either. Whether you’re looking for a light snack or full meal, you can choose from bakeries, a coffee shop, fresh fish and seafood, Mexican, Brazilian, Mediterranean, Pacific Rim, Indian or Vegan. Several restaurants feature live music nights and weekends. Laid-back during the day, Paia jams after the sun goes down. The north shore is also known for its beautiful, white sand beaches. Baldwin Beach Park is the first beach you encounter, driving from Kahului to Paia. It offers restrooms and picnic facilities. Paia Bay (referred to as Baby Beach by many of the locals) is located at the edge of town and perfect for swimming. Once you leave Paia heading east, you’ll see a sign for Kuau, home to the renowned Mama’s Fish House. The sandy cove in front of the restaurant and luxury homes is a quiet place to relax. Be sure to visit nearby Ho'okipa Beach Park where you can watch surfers year-round. During winter, the winds and big waves arrive on the north shore and the windsurfers, kite surfers and big wave riders come out to play. The shoreline is rocky, so unless you’re at an advanced level in watersports, it’s better to be a spectator. No matter what you like best about Maui, you can discover the extreme side while experiencing Paia.

The third product developed exclusively by Oils of Aloha®, is SOLaleur®, a unique formula that treats sunburns and other UV-related damage. Kapalua Resort is one of Maui's premier luxury destinations, encompassing 22,000 acres of land steeped in Hawaiian history and natural beauty. The northwest expanse reaches from the top of Puu Kukui, a watershed preserve filled with endangered species in a biologically important area, to pristine shorelines and beautiful bays. Visitors will also discover elegant resort accommodations, spas, residential communities, championship golf courses, top beaches and many adventure activities. There are five popular beaches fringing the bays found within the Kapalua Resort area, Slaughterhouse Beach at Mokuleia Bay and Honolua Bay, a marine conservation area popular for snorkeling, diving and surfing. The crescent-shaped white sand Kapalua Bay Beach and nearby D.T. Fleming Beach have both been at the top of America's best beach list (from Dr. Beach). Fleming Beach has lifeguards as it may generate rough surf, but is great for boogie boarding and surfing, and offers amenities like picnic tables and restrooms. Kapalua Bay Beach is protected at each end by in-curving lava rock formations, almost like enfolding arms. If you don't mind seasonal crowds, you'll enjoy good swimming, snorkeling, kayaking and standup paddling year-round, plus restrooms and showers are on-site. On a clear day you can see the island of Molokai across the narrow channel. Overlooking Honokahua Bay, at Makaluapuna Point, are the fierce-looking rock formations known as Dragon's Teeth. This jagged edged barrier was formed thousands of years ago, when lava flowed from the West Maui volcano to the sea. Waves and wind coming off the ocean swept up the lava and cooled in this shape. You can access this formation when walking along the designated Coastal Trail. Slaughterhouse Beach at Mokuleia Bay and famous Honolua Bay are separated by Kalaepiha Point and together form the Honolua-Mokuleia Marine Life Conservation District. This area is popular for snorkeling and diving, where bright corals thrive and tropical fish play hide-and-seek. During the winter, big wave surfers can be spotted cruising atop the cresting water. But these winter water conditions are rough; only the experts are out. It's best to follow local wisdom: when in doubt, don't go out. Nature lovers will find miles of self-guided walking and hiking trails from mountain ridge to seashore. Pick up a free map at the Kapalua Village Center. You'll find trailhead locations for the Maunalei Arboretum Trails, Mahana and Honolua Ridge Trails, and the Coastal and Village Walking Trails. The mountain ridge trails are located above a private, gated community, so hikers must take the shuttle from Kapalua Village Center for access to the area. The shuttle runs several times daily and is free.

Honolulu Cookie Company started in 1998 when entrepreneurs Keith and Janet Sung developed a recipe for premium shortbread cookies. As an artist, Keith wanted to develop something unique—a cookie that represented true Hawaiian hospitality. What he created was a line of island-inspired flavors in a signature pineapple shape. The recipe has been refined over the years, but dedication to quality ingredients inspired by the flavors of the islands haven’t wavered. From their bakery, stores opened throughout Honolulu, particularly in Waikīkī, to ensure the hospitality that inspired the cookies was delivered to visitors from around the world. Eventually, new locations opened on Maui, in Las Vegas and in Guam. Each progression is informed by a commitment to sharing the best experience of a Hawaiian vacation. The cookie collection packages are designed to delight and the stores are eager to share the Aloha Spirit, but it all begins with the cookies. The finest ingredients are selected to bake fresh daily and ship internationally to friends and fans around the world.

Dominating east Maui with its summit at 10,023 feet is the majestic volcanic crater known as Haleakalā (House of the Sun). One of only two national parks in Hawaii, Haleakalā is home to endangered bird species, rare native plants and out-of-this-world landscapes. There are also many cultural and historic sites within its boundaries from the moon-like summit to the rainforest of Kipahulu accessible only from the road to Hana/Highway 360. For those who seek a path less traveled, drive up to the summit in the late afternoon and stay for sunset. The above-clouds view toward the west is awe-inspiring. At night, a telescope offers unique perspective: the stars and heavenly bodies are so dense at this high elevation that you’ll see movement in the sky. In the summit area, explore over 30 miles of hiking trails that range from just 10 minutes to multi-day overnight trips. Stop by the visitor center and ask about the weekly Waikamoi Cloud Forest Hike that begins at Hosmer Grove just inside the park entrance. Call ahead to make reservations. If you’d like to volunteer while on vacation, visit the Friends of Haleakalā National Park’s website, fhnp.org, and find a schedule of service trips that will require backpacking into the crater, and possibly an overnight stay. From June to July, be on the lookout for the rare and endangered Haleakalā silversword. These endemic plants can only be found in the park, growing on volcanic cinder, a dry and rocky substrate subject to freezing temps and high winds. The skin and hairs of the silversword protect it from its harsh environment. Hawaii’s state bird, the nene, or Hawaiian goose, also calls Haleakalā home. The breeding season for this endangered native bird is October to March. Follow speed limits within the park so as to avoid any accidents with this protected species. Park Headquarters Visitor Center, 8 a.m.-3:45 p.m., 808-572-4459; Haleakalā Visitor Center, sunrise-3 p.m. Kipahulu District (coastal): The coastal section of Haleakalā National Park, referred to as the Kipahulu district, can only be accessed via the famous Hana Highway, and is located 12 miles past the town of Hana. The drive itself is worthy of exploration with its waterfalls, ocean vistas and so much more. Don't rush the journey—you'll find many stops to enjoy picture-perfect moments. There are several hikes available from the Kipahulu Visitors Center. The Pipiwai Trail is a moderately strenuous, four-mile (roundtrip) hike that will take you to the spectacular 400-ft. Waimoku Falls. Also view Oheo Gulch, otherwise known as Seven Pools. Kipahulu Visitor Center open 9 a.m.-4:30 p.m., 808-248-7375. In 1958, master divers Jack Ackerman and Larry Wembly went deep sea diving off Lahaina, Maui, and more than 200 feet below the surface, found something never seen before—Hawaiian black coral. The pair sold some trinkets from their dive shop until the following year when they met O‘ahu entrepreneur Cliff Slater. Thus, Maui Divers Jewelry was born. “Hawaiian black coral is only found in waters between 150 and 300 feet deep off Maui,” says Cole Slater, executive vice president for Maui Divers Jewelry. “From the beginning, Maui Divers was concerned about sustainability so they partnered with the University of Hawai‘i to research the black coral, and adopted methods of selective harvesting, which ensured the the coral’s continued growth. They also worked with agencies to agree on ways to carefully harvest from selected sites to ensure a healthy environment.” Hawaiian black coral is considered the most lustrous black coral in the world, and is featured in one of Maui Divers’ most popular collections, the Yin Yang collection. “It’s an eternal circle swirled into equal halves,” says Slater. “The Yin Yang symbol celebrates the Asian ideals of balance and harmony.” The pieces also include sparkling diamonds. Customers can also select cultured Tahitian black pearls, South Sea pearls, Japanese Akoya pearls, freshwater pearls, Australian opals, diamonds, peridot and other gemstones. Maui Divers carries the most unique Hawaiian Heirloom featuring tri-color gold and exclusive award-winning Living Heirloom jewelry. Maui Divers Jewelry offers a ‘forever guarantee’ that covers the workmanship and materials of every item forever, not just for the lifetime of the customer. “It’s great to know our jewelry gets handed down generations and we’re still here to take care of the products,” adds Slater. “We’re honored every day to be part of visitors’ Hawai‘i experience.” Visit Maui Divers Jewelry at their Līhu‘e locations at Anchor Cove and inside Hilo Hattie. Owner Chuck has been offering great souvenirs on Maui for over 27 years. Now, he’s starting his own brand. When Chuck opened his very first store, Awesome Tee’s, in Kihei, he soon realized that the “Tee’s” after the “Awesome” brought in people looking for golf tees - instead of T-shirts. He moved his business to the west side of the island and opened Logowear Maui in Lahaina, with Maui Resortwear following five years later. “I opened ‘Maui Nalu’ in Queen Kaahumanu Center in September of last year to be the spring board for our new, Maui Nalu brand of high quality aloha shirts, T-shirts and board shorts,” he says. In addition to bringing the Maui Nalu brand to life, the store offers quality Hawaiian lifestyle merchandise that appeals to visitors and locals alike. “We carry Reyn Spooner and Tori Richard as well and a fabulous selection of women’s and children’s wear.” The desire to build his own clothing brand which had been stirring around in his head all these years has finally come together for the native New Yorker. “So far we have the logo and we’re working on several Aloha and T-shirts designs,” he says. Chuck is an avid windsurfer who moved to Maui from Long Island “because I wanted to be someplace where I could be in the water twelve months a year- without a wetsuit! Now I’m launching a clothing brand that I, all my windsurfing friends and everyone else will feel great wearing when they’re both in and out of the water.” Visit Maui Nalu, Maui Resortwear and Logowear Maui and you’ll check all the boxes off your souvenir list.

What do the prestigious James Beard Foundation Award, television’s Top Chef and Hawai‘i’s ubiquitous ABC Stores all have in common? Sheldon Simeon, Executive Chef of the hot new restaurant LINEAGE in Wailea, Maui. Chef Sheldon, as he is known, was twice voted “Fan Favorite” during two separate appearances on the Bravo Network’s Top Chef. He opened LINEAGE in October 2018 in partnership with venerable ABC Stores and was nominated as a semi-finalist by the James Beard Foundation for Best New Restaurant in March. The James Beard Awards are akin to the Oscars for movies, so being named a semi-finalist is a prestigious honor. My wife and I, during a brief staycation recently, took the opportunity to dine at LINEAGE. The restaurant serves traditional local Hawai‘i fare in a unique way. Our delightful waiter Jordan got us started with a cocktail, a Mai’a Tai (the unique spelling is intentional) and a “mocktail,” a Menko Madness. We instantly realized why LINEAGE recently won a Best Cocktail competition on Maui. The Mai’a Tai, a blend of Banks 5 Rum, banana milk punch, walnut, pecan, Giffard Apricot de Rousillon, lime and almond-spice liqueur was delicious. The Menko Madness, a house-made POG (passion fruit-orange-guava) juice, coconut cream, lemon-lime soda and egg white, was a Hawaiian liquid treat—not too sweet and delightful. The restaurant is a shared plate concept and the first food offerings to the table arrived via dim sum cart and Alexandra, who walked us through each of the dishes. We chose house-made pita style chips with a cream cheese dip topped with mild kim chee spice, pickled vegetables from local farms and a salmon dumpling that my wife wouldn’t let me get near. The chips and dip lasted the whole meal and the pickled vegetables were perfect for munching between bites when the other dishes arrived. Since both my wife and I are grazers, we were in heaven. Jordan then walked us through the Snacks portion of the menu. We chose the Maui Flying Saucer after he informed us that locals waited 90 minutes in line at the Maui County Fair for them. OMG! I’ve been to a lot of county fairs where fried food reigns supreme, but the Flying Saucers came from somewhere in fried food heaven. It consists of two pieces of brioche bread enclosing homemade beef goulash and Tillamook Cheddar, and then fried. It was like the best grilled cheese we’ve ever had, except better, if that’s possible. [Full disclosure: this was the only item that we ordered that was filling, so don’t go crazy on the Flying Saucers unless you want to end up staring at all the other food on your table.] We countered the Flying Saucers with the Bottom of the Plate Lunch salad, which for locals, is self-explanatory. Picture everything left after you eat the meat at the top of a mixed plate—shaved cabbage, kalbi dressing, mac salad mayo and smoked beef fat—so Hawai‘i and so good. After much consulting with Jordan we picked two items off the Pupu Line—the Smoke Meat, a plate of sweet pork, guava jelly and piko onion and HRC-19, the local fresh catch of the day. In our case, it was Mahi Mahi served over Molokai sweet potato, upcountry carrots, macadamia nut and with a sugar cane buerre blanc sauce. I laugh thinking about the Smoke Meat, because at first my wife remarked that it might be her least favorite dish, but every time I looked up from my food she was putting more on her plate. By the end of the meal, it was gone and we laughed that it went from her least favorite to her most favorite. And, why not? The meat was a pork belly, or thick bacon, in a delicious sweet sauce topped with the sautéed pink onions. Ono! Words won’t describe the Mahi Mahi; just check out the photo. ‘Nuf said. While we were busy chowing down, General Manager Matt visited our table and brought a Charred Brocollini, compliments of the chef. I don’t know how he knew how much more I like brocollini than broccoli, but we appreciated it. Perfectly charred and served with a roof Yuzu vinaigrette, it was the perfect complement to the meat and fish. I was compelled to compliment Matt Godfrey on the service that Jordan and Alexandra provided and I could see him beam. “One thing we learned from ABC was the philosophy of treating employees like ‘ohana (family),” said Matt. “Instead of the typical restaurant philosophy of using part-time workers, we offer full-time hours and benefits.” The desserts—a lilikoi sorbet and the Filipino Cereal—were amazing. The sorbet was so tangy that it exploded on the taste buds. It was the perfect complement to the other, which was an adventurous blend of pannacotta on the bottom, fresh avocados, homemade cookies topped with a poured over sweet cream. The only thing more sublime than how it tasted was the story Jordan shared: “Chef Sheldon grew up in a large Filipino family that ate traditional food for breakfast, like Spam musubi and such. One day his grandfather found him the kitchen mixing crackers, sugar and cinnamon. When he asked him what he was doing, Sheldon told him that he had been introduced to cereal at a neighbor’s house. He was trying to make his own cereal!” We left LINEAGE feeling like we had a uniquely Hawaiian dining experience and a few new friends to boot. Don’t visit Maui without planning a meal there. If you don’t trust me, trust James Beard. Happy hour from 5:00PM-6:00PM.
Half of all visitors to Maui snorkel while on their vacation. Before you put on your mask and fins to explore our local coral reefs, please take a minute to become familiar with important steps you should take to protect these beautiful and fragile ecosystems. While coral reefs worldwide have become threatened by climate change, sediment runoff, and pollution from fertilizers and chemicals, the choices that visitors make when they’re visiting Maui significantly impact the health of our reefs,” says Maui Nui Marine Resource Council Chair and Co-Founder Robin Newbold. “As a visitor to Maui, your choices make a huge difference to our coral reefs,” says Newbold. “There are simple yet vital things visitors can do, or actually not do, to preserve this precious resource.” Maui Nui Marine Resource Council asks all who swim, surf, snorkel or dive in the ocean to avoid using sunscreens containing oxybenzone and octinoxate, two chemicals that are illegal in Hawaii because they harm and kill corals. Additional chemicals to avoid are avobenzone and octocrylene. Choose zinc based sunscreen instead or cover up with a rash guard, hat and swim tights to minimize your sun exposure. Second, avoid stepping or walking on coral. Doing so will harm the tiny soft-bodied animals called polyps that slowly build up the reef structure. Scraping against coral can cause serious infection as well. The team at Maui Nui Marine Resource Council recommends that you use a flotation device to help you keep your fins up and away from coral. If you must stand, stand only on sand, never on coral. Always give sea turtles at least 10 feet of space, in the water and on land. If you see a Hawaiian monk seal resting on shore, do not approach – and keep children and pets away – to protect these critically endangered marine mammals. Maui Nui Marine Resources Council is a 501(c)3 nonprofit founded in 2007 whose mission is to “preserve, protect and enhance the coral reefs of Maui Nui”. Visit our website for more information on how you can be a responsible guest.

Kenneth Roland Neizman (1932-2003), aka “CAPTAIN KENNY“, was described as “The Picasso Of The Pacific” by The Maui News in 1977. For over two decades from the early ‘70’s throughout the early ‘90’s, Captain Kenny was a fixture on the streets of Lahaina. Nearly every day he could be found creating his distinctly unique artwork under a palm tree at one of his makeshift studios down at the beach and then he’d wander the streets hawking his wares from his “cart gallery”, a shopping cart chock-full of his latest creations. With his unorthodox appearance, hilarious sales routines, and endearing antics, Captain Kenny was a beloved symbol of Maui’s individualism. He became the island’s unofficial Ambassador Of Aloha. As he put it, “It all began when the coconut hit me on the head!”. True story. From that point on, Captain Kenny began to create his artwork which features a large cast of characters comprised of zany/otherworldly/primitive sea creatures all born from his imagination. Usually rendered in his signature “stained glass” style, his art displays an innocent yet complex creative process known only to him. “Outsider Art”, a fast growing segment of the Art market today, is described in part as “Art made by self-taught or supposedly naïve artists with typically little or no contact with the conventions of the art worlds.” Captain Kenny is the consummate “Outsider”. The many people who were lucky enough to acquire Original Captain Kenny artwork during his lifetime have been substantially rewarded. The value of his work continues to dramatically appreciate over time. Examples in good condition are commanding four and five figures when they come to market. Most are held in private collections now and it’s increasingly rare to see original Captain Kenny artwork for sale. In homage to his legacy, Captain Kenny’s exclusive dealer, Edward Montgomery Fine Art, has created a collection of clothing, prints, and accessories based on Captain Kenny’s original creations. As a tribute to the artist and offered in the Aloha spirit in which this art was first created, “The Captain Kenny Collection” is an affordable, fun, and easily accessible way for everyone to experience the joy of owning art by “The Picasso Of The Pacific”, Maui’s own, CAPTAIN KENNY.
